CAN LA NINA HELP LOWER TEMPERATURES?

La Nina is a weather phenomenon characterized by abnormally reduced sea surface temperatures in the equatorial Pacific region. It is associated with both floods and droughts. Compared to El Nino, La Nina is generally considered cooler in terms of temperature.

Currently, El Nino shows signs of weakening in the coming months, and La Nina is expected to return at around 60% from July to September and 70% from August to November.

According to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the past 9 years have been the hottest period on record, despite the prolonged La Nina weather phenomenon from 2020 to early 2023. However, according to Ko Barrett, WMO Deputy Secretary-General, the end of El Nino does not necessarily mean that the significant climate impacts on the world caused by climate change will cease.
