Are paper cups really eco-friendly?

Did you know that paper cups, which we often perceive as “green,” can actually have a negative impact on the environment similar to single-use plastic cups? Studies have revealed surprising facts about these cups! In this article, we will delve deeper into why single-use paper cups are not the most sustainable solution and explore more sustainable alternatives.

To prevent liquids from leaking or deforming the cup, most paper cups are coated with a layer of polymer or polyethylene plastic. However, a recent study published in the Environmental Pollution Journal revealed that plastic-coated paper cups are also harmful to the environment and human health, just like single-use plastic cups.

Associate Professor and Doctor Le Quang Dien (Hanoi University of Science and Technology) stated that plastic-coated paper cups cannot be completely decomposed. Even when using natural materials like polylactic acid (PLA) from corn, cassava, or sugarcane, manufacturers still need to add chemicals like fluorescent agents for whitening. These chemicals can be hazardous to health when ingested, potentially causing cell mutations and cancer.

A recent study by the Indian Institute of Technology showed that using plastic-lined paper cups for hot drinks can be harmful to health. When pouring hot water into a paper cup, the inner plastic layer releases a large amount of microplastics and heavy metals such as zinc, lead, and chromium into the drink. This happens because high temperatures alter the structure of the plastic, causing microplastics and toxic substances to dissolve in the water.

Globally, most paper cups cannot be recycled due to the plastic lining that contaminates the paper material. As a result, about 99.75% of paper cups cannot be recycled and contribute to environmental pollution.

Switching from plastic cups to paper cups does not solve the root problem of waste and pollution. More importantly, we need to change our consumption habits. Instead of continuing to use single-use products, we can adopt more sustainable habits such as:

  • Carrying a personal water bottle: This habit not only reduces waste but also helps spread environmental awareness in the community.
  • Limiting the use of single-use products: We should reduce the use of products like plastic bags, plastic cutlery, and other types of disposable packaging.
  • Supporting environmentally friendly businesses: Supporting stores, cafes, or businesses that use reusable or environmentally friendly products is also a way to reduce plastic waste in the environment.
